Senior Flex Driver Shafts: How to Choose

Senior flex, A flex, M flex and Lite are the same thing: a shaft one step softer than regular, built to load and release for a smoother or slower swing. Age has nothing to do with it. If your drives have lost height and carry, or your regular shaft feels like a board, this is the flex to try, and this page covers how to pick the weight and launch to go with it and what we have in stock.

What senior flex is

Shaft flex runs from L (ladies) through A (senior), R (regular), S (stiff) and X (extra stiff). Senior flex is the A, one step softer than regular. The letter dates from when it stood for amateur, and some brands still print A, M or Lite on the shaft instead of the word senior. On our product pages it shows in the flex dropdown as A-flex (Senior). The shaft flex guide covers the whole scale if you want the background.

A softer flex loads with less force and releases later, which is what puts height and carry back for a player whose speed or tempo no longer loads a regular shaft. It is not a downgrade. A shaft you can load outperforms a stiffer one you cannot, every time.

Who should play it

Your flight has flattened

Drives that used to climb now come off low and run out, or balloon with no carry behind them. A regular shaft you cannot load gives you neither height nor spin control.

Your tempo is smooth

Flex follows tempo as much as speed. A smooth, rhythmic transition does not load a shaft the way a hard one does, so a smooth swinger can need senior flex at a speed where a hitter needs regular.

Regular feels like a board

If you cannot feel the head at the top of the swing and the club feels dead at impact, the shaft is too stiff for you. Senior flex gives the feel back.

If you are not sure which side of the line you are on, the 2-minute shaft quiz asks about speed, tempo, flight and miss and recommends a flex. Start there rather than guessing from age.

Weight and launch matter as much as flex

Changing the letter on its own is half the job. The players who do best with senior flex pair it with the right weight and launch profile.

Choice
What we tell customers
Shaft weight
Lighter is usually right. A lighter shaft is easier to swing faster, and most brands offer their A flex in the lighter weight classes for that reason. Go heavier only if you have trouble keeping tempo with a light club.
Launch profile
Higher launch helps most players who need senior flex, because the loss of height is usually the complaint. Mid launch suits those who already launch it high and are losing carry to spin.
Length
Resist going longer to chase distance. A longer club is harder to hit in the middle, and the center strike is where the yards are. Standard length, or a half inch shorter, is the usual answer.
Grip
A lighter grip raises swing weight and a heavier one lowers it. If the new build feels head-light, a few grams at the head fixes it; the swing weight calculator shows what each change does.

What we stock in senior flex

Our senior flex driver and fairway shafts collection holds every driver and fairway shaft we carry with an A-flex option, raw or assembled with your adapter and grip. Brands in it today include Fujikura, Mitsubishi, Aldila, UST Mamiya, Project X, Graphite Design, KBS, Grafalloy, Aretera and Alpha Golf, from value lines up to the same shafts the tour players use in stiffer flexes. For irons, the senior flex iron shafts collection holds the graphite options we carry in A flex, including the Aerotech SteelFiber i70 and UST Recoil 65.

Every assembled shaft ships with the OEM adapter for your driver already installed. If you are not sure which adapter you need, our Titleist, Ping and Cobra adapter guides cover it, and the dropdown on each product page lists every brand we build for.

Not sure where to start?

Tell us the driver you play, the shaft in it now, and what your ball flight is doing. Text (408) 475-7570 and we will point you at two or three shafts rather than two hundred. We have been fitting and building shafts since 1991 and senior flex is one of the most common builds that leaves our shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a senior flex driver shaft?

A senior flex shaft, also labeled A, M or Lite, is one step softer than regular on the L, A, R, S, X flex scale. It loads with less force and releases later, which puts height and carry back for a player whose speed or tempo no longer loads a regular shaft. It has nothing to do with age.

How do I know if I need senior flex?

Three signs: your drives have lost height and carry, your regular shaft feels stiff or dead at impact, and your tempo is smooth rather than aggressive. Speed alone does not decide it, because a smooth swinger loads a shaft less than a hitter at the same speed. Our 2-minute shaft quiz asks about speed, tempo, flight and miss and recommends a flex.

Should a senior flex driver shaft be lighter?

Usually, yes. A lighter shaft is easier to swing faster with the same effort, which is why most brands offer their A flex in the lighter weight classes. Pair it with a higher launch profile if lost height is the complaint, and keep the length standard or a half inch shorter rather than going longer.

Can I get a senior flex shaft assembled for my driver?

Yes. Every shaft in our senior flex collection can ship assembled with the adapter for your driver brand and a grip installed, cut to your length. Choose A-flex (Senior) from the flex dropdown and your driver brand from the adapter dropdown on the product page.
