The True Temper Shaft Guide
True Temper has built steel iron shafts in Amory, Mississippi since 1964, and Dynamic Gold remains the most-played steel shaft on professional tours. This guide walks every current iron-shaft family — Dynamic Gold, DG MID, AMT and Elevate — so you can match weight, flex and ball flight to your swing before you buy.

What Makes True Temper Shafts Different?
True Temper isn't a marketing story — it's a steel mill with a 60-plus-year track record. Here's what actually sets the brand apart, and why its shafts keep showing up on tour and in serious players' bags.
American steel since 1964
True Temper has made its steel iron shafts in Amory, Mississippi since 1964. The original Dynamic steel shaft dates back to 1941, and its recognizable stepped design has carried through generations of equipment.
Weight-sorted consistency
Tour Issue shafts are sorted to extremely tight weight tolerances, so every shaft in a set matches. That repeatability is the reason fitters and tour players reach for them.
The austempering process
A signature austempering heat treatment forms a seamless, 360-degree steel tube, so the shaft delivers the same feel and response at any orientation.
Proven on tour
True Temper reports its brands were in play for 37 of 39 men's tour winners in the 2025 season — more than any other shaft maker.
Ascending Mass Technology (AMT)
AMT shafts increase weight by about 3 grams per club through the set while keeping swing weight consistent, blending easier-to-launch long irons with heavier, more controlled scoring clubs.
Low torque across the line
Steel construction keeps torque low on every model, which helps control face rotation and tighten dispersion for more repeatable iron play.
The Four True Temper Iron-Shaft Families
True Temper splits its iron line into four families. The simplest way to read the range: Dynamic Gold is the heavy, low-launching tour standard; DG MID keeps Dynamic Gold's feel but raises trajectory; AMT uses Ascending Mass Technology to vary weight through the set; and Elevate is the lightest, highest-launching option. Every shaft below carries a low torque rating from the manufacturer.
DG Dynamic Gold — the tour standard
The benchmark steel iron shaft, designed for a low, penetrating ball flight with controlled spin and the workability stronger ball-strikers look for. The standard Dynamic Gold runs roughly 127–130 g depending on flex, with the widest flex matrix in the line — R300, S200, S300, S400 and X100.
Lighter Dynamic Gold options: DG 120 (116–120 g), DG 105 (101–105 g) and DG 95 (95 g) drop weight for easier speed — DG 120 holds the low flight, while DG 95 is the lightest and softest-feeling, with a higher launch and spin. There's also the Dynamic Gold Spinner (128 g), a wedge-specific shaft with a longer, more active tip for added greenside spin.
Dynamic Gold vs Dynamic Gold Tour Issue: They share the same design and low, penetrating flight. The difference is sorting. Standard Dynamic Gold comes in the full flex range (R300 through X100) at production tolerances. Dynamic Gold Tour Issue is hand-sorted to the tightest weight tolerance True Temper makes — every shaft in the set matches — which is why it's the choice on tour. Tour Issue is offered in S400 and X100 only.
Where X7 fits: Dynamic Gold X7 (133 g, X-stiff) is the heaviest and stiffest shaft in the line, built for stronger, faster swings that need the lowest possible launch and spin.
M DG MID — Dynamic Gold feel, higher flight
DG MID is for players who want Dynamic Gold's consistency but need the ball higher in the air. A stiffer mid-section with a more active tip raises launch and spin versus a same-weight Dynamic Gold. The range covers DG MID 100 (105 g), DG MID 115 (114–116 g) and the heavier DG MID 130 Tour Issue.

A AMT — Ascending Mass Technology
AMT shafts get progressively heavier through the set in 3-gram steps: lighter in the long irons to help launch and speed, heavier in the short irons for control. The family spans four flight options — AMT White (low launch, the heaviest at ~102–130 g), AMT Silver (mid, ~102–130 g), AMT Black (mid-high, ~94–116 g) and AMT Red (high launch, the lightest at ~94–106 g). All use a .355" tip.
E Elevate — lightweight, high launch
Elevate is the lightest steel option in the current line, built to get the ball up for moderate swing speeds and smoother tempos. The Elevate 85 Black pairs a lightweight profile with a high launch and added spin for more peak height and stopping power.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between Dynamic Gold, DG MID, AMT and Elevate?
What's the difference between Dynamic Gold, DG MID, AMT and Elevate?
Dynamic Gold is the heavy, low-launching tour standard for players who want a penetrating flight and maximum control. DG MID keeps that Dynamic Gold feel but raises trajectory in lighter weights. AMT uses Ascending Mass Technology, so the shaft is lighter in the long irons and heavier in the short irons. Elevate is the lightest, highest-launching steel option in the line.
How do I choose a True Temper shaft by weight and flex?
How do I choose a True Temper shaft by weight and flex?
Start with weight, then flex. Heavier shafts such as Dynamic Gold at 127–130 g tend to lower flight and suit faster, more aggressive tempos; lighter shafts such as DG 95, DG 105, and Elevate help speed and launch for smoother or moderate tempos. Within a weight, flex controls how the shaft loads. Because the right combination depends on your swing, a fitting is the most reliable way to confirm it.
Which True Temper shaft is right for my swing?
Which True Temper shaft is right for my swing?
If you want the lowest, most controlled flight, play standard Dynamic Gold or DG 120. If you like Dynamic Gold but need more height, move to DG MID. If you want lighter weight for more speed, look at DG 105, DG 95, AMT Silver, or AMT Red. For the lightest steel and the highest launch, choose Elevate. For wedges built around spin, use Dynamic Gold Spinner.
How does True Temper compare to KBS and Nippon for steel iron shafts?
How does True Temper compare to KBS and Nippon for steel iron shafts?
All three make tour-proven steel iron shafts; the right pick comes down to weight, flight, and feel rather than brand alone. True Temper's Dynamic Gold is the classic heavy, low-launch reference point, with lighter and higher-launching options across DG MID, AMT, and Elevate. To compare across brands, see our KBS shaft guide and Nippon shaft guide, then match by the weight and trajectory you need.
