Shaft guide
SteelFiber is the graphite iron shaft that plays like steel. A carbon core keeps the weight and vibration of graphite; a wrap of steel filament around the outside puts the stability back. It is the graphite iron shaft most tour players who switch end up on, and it comes in every weight from 55 g to 125 g. This guide covers the i-series, the fc Flight Control series, the hybrid, fairway and putter shafts, and how to pick between them.

A SteelFiber shaft starts as a filament-wound carbon core. That is where the light weight and the vibration damping come from. Around it, Aerotech winds a mesh of stainless steel filament, each strand about 8 microns across, roughly a tenth the width of a hair, and by True Temper's count more than 59 miles of it per shaft. Steel is about five times as dense as carbon, so a thin layer on the outside adds a lot of mass at the surface of the tube. That moves the shaft wall's center of gravity outward, raises its resistance to twisting, and gives the shaft the hoop strength a steel shaft has and a plain graphite shaft does not. The result is a shaft that weighs what graphite weighs, holds its shape through impact the way steel does, and feels smoother than either on a mishit.
True Temper now makes and rates SteelFiber. Its rating for the i-series and fc is high launch, high spin, moderate tempo. That is a graphite rating: compared with a steel shaft of the same weight, SteelFiber launches higher and spins a little more. Compared with a conventional graphite iron shaft, it is the lower-launching, lower-torque option.
The number is the weight in grams. The i95 is the one most tour players use and the one we sell most of; the i110 and i125 are for players coming out of heavy steel who want nothing to change but the vibration; the i55 through i80 are for the player who wants to lighten the set. The taper-tip "cw" versions are constant weight and made to length for each iron, so there is no tip trimming. The parallel version is one 41" shaft that you trim per iron.

Constant-weight taper shafts come one per iron with the butt left long; see how tapered tip shaft lengths work. Collections: .355" taper tip, .370" parallel tip, 8-shaft sets. Torque figures are the ones True Temper publishes; blank cells are models it has not published a figure for.
The fc is the same SteelFiber construction with a softer, progressive tip section. In the mid and long irons it adds launch; in the 8-iron through wedges it stiffens back to the standard SteelFiber profile so the scoring clubs do not balloon. It is the pick for the player who likes the feel of an i-series but cannot get a 4- or 5-iron in the air with it. The parallel fc comes in 70, 80 and 90 weight classes; the taper fc comes in 90 and 115, both constant weight.

Full line: fc collection. The 115 is the heavier of the two taper fc profiles and the easier move for a player coming out of full-weight steel who wants more height.
SteelFiber's idea of sitting between steel irons and graphite woods is exactly what a hybrid asks for, so the hls hybrid shafts are the ones we fit most for a player with steel irons and graphite woods who wants the hybrid to feel like neither extreme. The hfs780 does the same job in a fairway wood. The putter shaft is built stiffer than a steel putter shaft to limit movement in the stroke.

Still not sure? The 2-minute shaft quiz narrows it by speed and tempo, and our graphite vs steel iron shafts page covers the broader decision.
Check your iron heads. A .355" taper hosel takes the cw shafts, which arrive made for each iron and are trimmed at the butt only. A .370" parallel hosel takes the parallel shafts, which are tip trimmed per iron and butt trimmed to length. If you are not sure which your irons have, the old shaft tells you: a taper tip narrows over its last inch or so, a parallel tip is the same diameter to the end. Our graphite iron shaft installation guide walks through pulling steel and installing SteelFiber, and we can build a full set to your specs if you would rather not.
Every Aerotech SteelFiber shaft on this page in one list: tip, launch and spin, the flexes we stock, weight and torque, from the maker's spec charts and our product pages. A blank cell is a figure the maker has not published. Click a model to open it.
Tell us the steel shaft you play now, its flex and what you want to change, and we will give you the SteelFiber that matches. Text (408) 475-7570. We have sold SteelFiber since it was the only graphite iron shaft a tour player would touch, and the fitting has not changed: match the weight you play, then decide on height.
FAQ
A graphite iron shaft with a filament-wound carbon core and a wrap of fine stainless steel filament around the outside. The carbon keeps the weight down and damps vibration; the steel fiber adds stability and resistance to twisting. True Temper now makes and rates it.
Both. The core is carbon fiber, so it weighs what a graphite shaft weighs and feels smoother than steel. The outer layer is steel filament, which is what gives it steel-like stability and low torque. In fitting terms it plays like a lower-launching, lower-torque graphite shaft, or a lighter, softer-feeling steel one.
Constant weight. Every cw shaft in a set weighs the same, so an i95cw 3-iron shaft and an i95cw wedge shaft are both 95 g. They are taper-tip (.355") shafts made to length for each iron and trimmed only at the butt.
Weight and tip. The i95cw is 95 g with the standard SteelFiber tip; the fc90 is 90 g with a softer, progressive Flight Control tip that adds height in the mid and long irons while keeping the scoring clubs the same. Pick the fc if you struggle to launch long irons, the i95 if you do not.
The i110cw or i125cw, or the fc115. They sit in the same weight class as those steel shafts, with torque under 2 degrees, so tempo and swing weight stay where they were and the main change is less vibration at impact.
