WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Project X HZRDUS Black Gen 5 is a low-launch, low-spin driver shaft for players with a fast tempo. The Gen 5 adds True Temper's 4D Optimized Carbon weave to the midsection, the part of the shaft under the most stress, angled to resist twisting. We sell it in the 60, 70 and 80 series, 5.5 through TX flex. It arrives assembled with your choice of adapter and grip, ready to attach to your driver or fairway wood head.

Who It's For

Good fit if you...

  • Have a fast, aggressive tempo and load the shaft hard in transition
  • Launch the ball too high or spin it too much with your current shaft
  • Want a flatter, more penetrating flight that holds up in the wind
  • Played an earlier HZRDUS Black and want the current version
  • Want a heavier build: we sell the 70 and 80 series as well as the 60

Not the right fit if you...

  • Have a smooth or deliberate tempo: True Temper rates this shaft for fast tempos
  • Already launch the ball low or struggle to carry it: look at a mid-launch shaft such as the Denali Frost Blue
  • Need a senior or lighter flex: the lightest option is the 60 series in 5.5

How It Plays

True Temper rates the Gen 5 Black low spin, low trajectory and fast tempo, the same flight window HZRDUS Black has been known for. It is built for players who transition hard and need a shaft that won't kick the ball up or add spin when they swing aggressively.

The change in Gen 5 is the 4D Optimized Carbon weave. True Temper places it in the midsection and angles it for torsional resistance, so the shaft twists less through the downswing and transfers more of your energy to the ball.

Torque drops as the weight and flex go up, from 3.5 in the 60 and 70 series 5.5 down to 2.5 in the 80 TX. Faster, stronger swings usually move up in weight as well as flex.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the HZRDUS Black Gen 5 designed for?

Players with a fast tempo who launch the ball too high or spin it too much. True Temper rates it low trajectory, low spin and fast tempo. If your tempo is smooth or you already hit it low, a mid-launch shaft is usually the better choice.

What changed from the Gen 4 Black?

Both are rated low launch and low spin. The Gen 5 adds True Temper's 4D Optimized Carbon weave in the midsection, angled for torsional resistance, to cut twisting and improve energy transfer.

What do the numbered Project X flexes mean?

Project X uses numbers instead of letters: 5.0 is senior, 5.5 is regular, 6.0 is stiff, 6.5 is x-stiff and TX is tour x-stiff. The series number (50, 60, 70 or 80) is the weight class. Our Project X Flex Codes guide explains the full scale.

Can this shaft be built for a fairway wood?

Yes. Select the fairway wood option and your adapter when adding to cart. Fairway builds can be cut from 38.5" to 43.5" adapter tip to grip, or built to the standard length for your head.

What's included with this assembled shaft?

The shaft arrives with your OEM-compatible adapter tip installed (Callaway, Cleveland, Cobra, Krank, Mizuno, Ping, PXG, Srixon, TaylorMade, Titleist, Tour Edge or Wilson; see all shaft adapters) and your chosen grip installed. Club head is not included. Just attach to your driver or fairway wood head and play. See full assembled shaft details.

Can I return an assembled shaft?

No. Each assembled shaft is built to your specs, so we can't restock it. Double-check your flex, length, grip and adapter before you order, and contact us if you'd like help confirming them.

Not sure which shaft is right for your game?

Text our shaft experts at (818) 473-9086 before you order. We've been fitting golfers since 1991 and are happy to talk through your swing speed, current shaft, and what you're trying to fix.

Questions & Answers

Have a Question?

Ask a Question
  • How do I choose flex and weight?

Match your flex to your swing speed, and your weight to your preferred feel (lighter = speed, heavier = control).

  • How is the Gen 5 different from the Gen 4?

The HZRDUS Black Gen 5 builds on the Gen 4 with updated materials and improved stability, but keeps a very similar low launch, low spin profile.

The biggest difference is that Gen 5 uses new 4D optimized carbon in the midsection, which helps improve energy transfer and torsional stability, giving it a slightly smoother and more responsive feel compared to Gen 4.
