How To Build Up with Grip Tape

HOW TO BUILD UP WITH GRIP TAPE

If you're new to re-gripping, first read through the "How To Re-Grip Your Clubs" guide to understand all aspects of re-gripping. Then come back to dive into the details of using grip tape. Here are 6 important topics to review before applying double-sided grip tape.

1) **VERY** IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT DOUBLE-SIDED TAPE

When using double-sided grip tape, make sure to first peel the backing off of the tape. BOTH sides of the tape are sticky. If you leave the wax paper on one side, the tape may not adhere properly to the grip.

2) HOW MUCH GRIP TAPE DO I NEED?

To install a grip, you need at least 1 wrap of grip tape to match the stated size of the grip. This means there is one layer of tape that goes around (and does not overlap) the grip, regardless of the size of the grip. What happens if you apply more than 1 wrap, you ask? Good question.., lets head on over to #3:

3) HOW DO I USE GRIP TAPE TO INCREASE MY GRIP SIZE?

Our Premium Double-Sided Grip Tape has a thickness of 0.0075 inches. Using one layer of tape around the shaft already increases your diameter by 0.0075 x 2, or 0.015 inches. Based on this calculation, here are the number of wraps to use when you want to increase the size of your grip, starting with a bare grip:

A) To Increase your grip size from Standard to Midsize*:
Apply 4 (extra) WRAPS of grip tape (which will add ~1/16" to the diameter)
B) To increase your grip size from Midsize to Oversize/Jumbo*:
Apply 4 (extra) WRAPS of grip tape (which will add ~1/16" to the diameter)
C) To increase your grip size from Undersize to Standard*:
Apply 2 (extra) WRAPS of grip tape (which will add ~1/32" to the diameter)
IMPORTANT NOTE: You only need to apply solvent to the last layer of tape, before installing the grip.

*(Another) IMPORTANT NOTE: Sometimes adding more than 1 layer of grip tape may compromise the torque (the amount of twisting that can occur during a swing) of your club. Please do so at your own discretion.

4) WHY DO I NEED GRIP SOLVENT

Solvent is needed to both lubricate as well as activate (the stickiness of) the tape so that when dry, the tape will adhere to the inside of the grip. We recommend using a generous amount of solvent to avoid the grip getting stuck halfway. Many club-builders allow the solvent to drip into a pan so they can re-use it again.

5) CAN I USE MINERAL SPIRITS INSTEAD OF SOLVENT

Yes, you can! We sell tape solvent (made by Brampton Technologies) in all our grip kits. But you should know that this solvent is actually NOT the most effective liquid for re-gripping. We use it and sell it here because it is the only one safe enough to meet all California environmental regulations (where our company is based). Mineral spirits is actually a better option for making the tape very slippery and easy for the grip to slide on. You can purchase mineral spirits at any hardware or home improvement store.

6) WATCH VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS

It's extremely helpful to watch one of the video instructions. Here you'll see a professional club-fitter applying grip tape and subsequently using solvent to activate it. Watch the instruction video for your brand of grips before you begin. If there is no specific video for your brand of grips below, then use this General Instruction Video as your guide.
