WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Fujikura Ventus TR Black with VeloCore is the original-generation TR Black: a low-launch, low-spin driver shaft built for golfers 100 mph and up who launch it high and spin it even in a stiff shaft. The stiffest tip in the line, a handle firmer than the Blue's, a high bend point, and Spread Tow fabric in the mid and handle to cut twist through a fast transition. We sell it from the 5 to the 8 series in S and X, seven options, and it arrives with your adapter tip and grip installed, cut to length, ready to screw into your driver or fairway wood.

Not sure TR Black is your profile? Take the 2-Minute Shaft Quiz or compare every profile in our Fujikura Ventus Shaft Guide.

This is the original Ventus TR Black, with VeloCore and Spread Tow. The current version is the assembled 2026 Ventus TR Black VeloCore+. It keeps the Spread Tow fabric and swaps in the VeloCore+ core, a multi-material bias core with one more core material than the original, carries the same low launch, low spin rating on Fujikura's chart, and adds a 9 X at 97 g. If you already play this generation and like it, there's no reason to move. If you're buying your first TR Black, look at both.

Who It's For

Good fit if you...

  • Swing 100 mph or faster with a quick, aggressive tempo
  • Launch it too high or spin it too much even in a stiff, low-spin shaft
  • Load the shaft hard from the top and want a tip and handle that don't give
  • Want it built to your adapter, length and grip, ready to play the day it arrives

Not the right fit if you...

  • Swing under about 100 mph. The TR Blue has the same low spin with a mid bend point and a softer handle
  • Have a smooth, slow tempo. You won't load this shaft enough to get anything out of it, and the TR Red will carry it further
  • Build your own clubs and just want the raw shaft. Grab the uncut TR Black and save the build time

How It Plays

No soft section anywhere. The lowest tip flex number in the line at every series, a handle firmer than the Blue's at every series, and a high bend point. The tip doesn't kick up at impact and the handle doesn't load early, so there's nothing in the shaft adding height or spin. Drive through the ball with speed and you get a flat, boring flight. Try to help the ball up and you get a low one that leaks right (for a right-hander).

Spread Tow in the mid and handle. Spread Tow is an ultra-light carbon fabric laid into the mid and handle sections to keep them from twisting and going out of round while you load the shaft. In the Black it's paired with a handle that's firmer than the Blue's at every series, which makes this the TR for the most aggressive move.

Low and low on every option. Every TR Black on the chart is rated low launch, low spin with a high bend point. Torque runs from 3.5 in the 5 S down to 2.6 in the 8 X. VeloCore, the multi-material bias core, keeps the tip from twisting on off-center hits, so the misses stay in play.

Before you pick your options

  • Weight before flex. The 5 series is 59 to 60 g, the 6 is 69.5 to 70, the 7 is 79.5 to 80 and the 8 X is 89. If your driver shaft today is in the high 60s, start with the TR Black 6. When you want more stability, go up a series before you go from S to X.
  • S and X only. There's no regular flex in the original TR Black. Our rule of thumb is S from about 100 mph and X from about 105. Below that, you'll lose distance rather than gain control, and the TR Blue 6 R is the closest low-spin option.
  • Length is measured adapter tip to grip. The number you pick is the shaft assembly with no head on it. Choose the standard length option for your brand and you get that brand's stock playing length. For a custom length, remember the head adds roughly an inch, so a driver you want to play at 45.25" is about a 44.25" tip-to-grip build. Every half inch you take off costs about three swingweight points, so if you go shorter than stock, tell us and we can add tape under the grip or you can plan a heavier head weight.

Graphite. Raw length 46" before we cut it, parallel tip section 3.0", tip diameter 0.335" (our measurement; the tip diameter isn't on Fujikura's chart). Tip flex and butt flex are Fujikura's stiffness ratings; within a model, the stiffer flex has the lower number.

How the Original Ventus TR Line Compares

Profile Launch Spin Bend Point Weights Our Speed Guide
TR Red Mid-high Mid-low Mid (7 X and 8 X: mid-high) 59 to 89.5 g 70 to 105 mph
TR Blue Mid Low Mid 56 to 97 g 85 to 110 mph
TR Black (You're here) Low Low High 59 to 89 g 100+ mph

Launch, spin and bend point are Fujikura's ratings. Line the three up at the same series and flex and the TR Red carries the highest tip flex number, so its tip is the softest of the three; the TR Black carries the lowest. The speed column is our fitting guidance from building these for customers, not a Fujikura number. Want the Black profile without the Spread Tow layer? That's the assembled original Ventus Black. The whole brand lineup is in The Fujikura Shaft Guide.

Prefer to Build It Yourself?

The same shaft is available uncut with nothing installed: the Fujikura Ventus TR Black Driver & Fairway Shaft (Original VeloCore), in every weight and flex on this page. Pair it with an adapter from our OEM shaft adapters and you're set. See every assembled shaft we build, or browse all driver and fairway shafts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from the regular Ventus Black?

Both are low launch, low spin, with a high bend point. The TR Black adds the Spread Tow fabric in the mid and handle, which keeps the shaft from loading early under an aggressive transition. If you load it hard and the assembled original Ventus Black still feels like it moves at the top, the TR is the one. If you like the Black as it is, stay there.

I'm between the TR Blue and the TR Black. Which one?

Go Blue unless you have a specific reason to go Black. Both are low spin. If you still launch it too high and spin it in the TR Blue, the Black's high bend point is the fix. If your launch is fine and you just want more stability, go up a series in the Blue instead and keep the mid launch.

I want it half an inch shorter than stock. What length do I order?

Our length dropdown is measured from the adapter tip to the end of the grip, with no head on it. The standard length option for your brand is that brand's stock length, so for half an inch shorter, pick a custom length half an inch under that number. If you'd rather tell us the finished playing length you want, contact us with your head model and we'll work out the tip-to-grip number, since the head adds length (about an inch on most drivers).

Can I use this in a fairway wood?

Yes. Choose the fairway wood option and your adapter when you add it to the cart. The 7 X and 8 X are the usual 3 wood picks, one series heavier than what you'd play in the driver.

I'm left-handed. Is anything different about the build?

Nothing about the shaft itself. It isn't handed, and the specs and performance are identical. The only difference is the adapter: some brands make a separate left-handed sleeve, and we install the right one for your head. Just pick your brand and we'll take it from there.

Not sure which shaft is right for your game?

Text our shaft experts at (818) 473-9086 before you order. We've been fitting golfers since 1991 and are happy to talk through your swing speed, current shaft, and what you're trying to fix.
